Whiteside County

YWCA costume party

STERLING – The Eat, Drink and Be Scary costume contest, featuring carnival games, a family version of Minute To Win It, and free food, runs from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Sterling-Rock Falls Family YMCA, 412 First Ave. The costume contest for ages 3 and younger is at 5:30 p.m., for ages 4 to 6 at 6 p.m.; 7 to 9 at 6:30 p.m., and 10 and older at 7 p.m. Admission is a can of food. ROCK FALLS – Selmi’s annual fall festival features a petting zoo, corn maze and barn playland for younger kids, weekend horse-drawn wagon rides, outdoor displays, pumpkins, gourds, apples and a gift shop 1206 Dixon Ave. Open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Oct. 31. Great Pumpkin Patch

LYNDON – The Great Pumpkin Patch is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, weather permitting, through Oct. 31 at 16470 Black Road. Admission Monday through Friday is free, and $1 on Saturday and Sunday. Blue Goose Run

STERLING – Blue Goose Run’s Mystery Maze II is open through Nov. 6 at 14609 Blue Goose Road. The maze is open from 5 to 10:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, with last entry at 8:30 p.m.; 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday, with last entry at 8:30 p.m.; and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, with last entry at 3:30 p.m. Bring flashlights after dark. Monster breakfast

DIXON – The second annual Monster Breakfast will be held from 7 to 10 a.m. Oct. 29 at the Post House Ballroom, 100 W. Second St. Dine with costumed characters and feast on pancakes, eggs and sausage by Mama Cimino’s. Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for children, and minus $1 if you come in costume. Afterward, walk over to Haymarket Square for the Noon Lion’s Club annual Halloween parade at 10 a.m., followed by games and activities for the kids.

COMPTON – The annual Halloween parade and hot dog roast starts at 3:45 p.m. Oct. 30. Judging will start at 4 p.m., followed by the parade from the Compton Fire Department building to Compton Park. Free hot dogs, chips and hot chocolate will be served at the park. Call 815-497-3862.

Haunted Haven

ROCK FALLS – Haunted Haven’s haunted house is open from 7 to 11 p.m. Oct. 21, 22, 28, 29, 30 and 31, 2.5 miles south of Rock Falls at the intersection of state Route 40 and Grennan Road. Raven’s Grin

MOUNT CARROLL – Raven’s Grin Haunted House is open year round from 7 p.m. to midnight Monday through Friday and from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $13. Nightmare on Fairgrounds Road

PRINCETON – Nightmare on Fairgrounds Road will be open Fridays and Saturdays through Oct. 29 at the Bureau County Fairgrounds, 811 W. Peru St. It offers haunted barns, a haunted hay rack ride, a bonfire, concessions and souvenirs. The haunted barn is open from 7 to 9:30 p.m.; cost is $8 per person or $10 if you don’t want to wait in line. Back by popular demand and better than ever is Nightmare Hotel – all the fun without the screams. It’s open to all ages from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Admission is $2. Asylum of Mad Dreams

CORDOVA – The Asylum of Mad Dreams at Cordova Dragway Park, 19425 state Route 84, features six different haunted themes, including Ride to Nowhere, Chaos Carnival and The Morgue. Admission is $15, or $13 on Sundays with a high school or college student ID. Hours are 7 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday and 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Oct. 30.
